Understanding social determinants of health...promoting health and achieving health equity
ABOUT US
Behind the Scenes

The Stanly County Minority Health Council, initiated by the Stanly County Department of Public Health, was formed in 2014 in recognition of the need to gain wider community support for addressing issues of health and community disparities and inequities, particularly in underserved communities. Here at the Stanly County Minority Health Council, we see the value in everyone. We want to be a catalyst for positive change, and since our beginnings in 2014, we’ve been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our organization upon: support, empowerment, and progress. Learn more about our mission, our vision, and how we go about making the changes we want to see.

MISSION STATEMENT
Serve as an advocate, resource and collaborative partner with the Health Department, Partners in Health and other community based organizations to encourage programs and policy initiatives that: 1) promote disease prevention and wellness; 2) address social determinants of health through traditional public health programs, processes, and organizational structures, and 3) improve the social, economic, and physical environments of underserved communities.
VISION STATEMENT
All of Stanly County's residents have the opportunity to attain their full health potential and no one is disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of their social position or other socially determined circumstances.

A healthy lifestyle is more than just your body, medicine and doctors.
Health disparities are referred to health inequities when they are the result of the systematic and unjust distribution of (access to) social determinants/conditions that support health (e.g. healthy food/food security, good housing, good education, safe neighborhoods, job opportunities, access to care, insurance coverage, transportation, hopelessness, social networks, freedom from racism, and other forms of discrimination).
